2. Description
We would like to report the detail of the problem that the ICs manufactured by
Lattice, which are used commonly for Pastel/ C-Jupiter/ C-Dragon series, failed in
some fields as below.

because the capacitor was changed from November production.  The part code of
DSPF memory PWB is also changed from DS528 to DS538 for the cost down
from December production.  (Both are changed not for the defect of this case.)

Failure of SCAN IN PWB
•  Cannot use copy/ scan functions.
•  Sometimes it cannot copy/ scan for some specific operation of OC operation,
RSPF operation, colour/ monochrome operation.
•  The main scanning direction deviates and skewed image is printed.
•  Usually it operates normally, but sometimes it cannot copy/ scan.
•  The copy/ scan job stops in the middle of operation when the phenomenon
above occurs, and the job cannot be cleared.
It also becomes impossible to turn off by the power switch of the operation
panel.  (It can be turned off only by the main power supply.)
Failure of DSPF memory PWB
•  It cannot copy/scan in D-S/ D-D modes.  (It operates normally in S-S/ S-D
modes.)
•  It can copy/ scan only either of colour or monochrome jobs in D-S/ D-D
modes.
Failure of DOCC PWB
•  The document control pattern cannot be detected.  No error codes are
displayed.
•  The document control pattern of the same original cannot be detected
sometimes.
•
It cannot copy/ scan depending on how the IC is damaged
Cause of occurrence
Coating  is  applied  on  the  surface
of the IC chip when manufacturing
the  IC  as  in  the  diagram  on  the
right.  It  was  revealed  that  the
thickness  of  the  coating  of  some
ICs  was  thicker  than  usual.  If  the
coating  is  thick,  the  coating  itself
absorbs  moisture.    If  the  IC  is
energized  in  such  a  state,  the  IC
chip  and  the  resin  mold  come
apart, which leads to the failure of
the IC.
This failure occurs when the IC itself absorbs moisture as described above.
Therefore, we consider this failure tends to occur on the machines which are used
in an area of high humidity such as South East Asia, and which are not used for a
long time (i.e. the time the IC absorbs moisture is long).

The IC manufacturer reported that the ICs from the lot numbers above might
contain defective ICs in July 2006.  We collected the ICs from above lots from the
substrate vendors as a precaution.
We confirmed that the ICs from the concerned lots are not used since October
production of the machines and the DSKs.
We replaced the inventory of SCAN IN PWB/ DSPF memory PWB at JPC in
October this year.
(DOCC PWB is not supplied as a service part.)

Actions for SCAN IN PWB / DSPF memory PWB
This defect tends to occur in a high humidity area.  It was reported only from
SRH, SRS and the Philippines.
Based on the situation of occurrence in the past, we consider it rarely occurs in
other than highly humid areas.
Please replace when the defect occurs.
We will observe the situation of occurrence, and if it were found to be an epidemic
failure, we would like to discuss the method of field action then.  We appreciate
your understanding and co-operation.
Please collect the Sim22-6 data, investigate the date of installation of the machine
and the date of occurrence and report to us when the defect occurs, so that we can
observe the defect.
Therefore, please check the lot number of the IC of DOCC PWB at the time of
installation of the machine or during the service operation, and replace the
substrate if it is from the concerned lot regardless of occurrence of the defect.  We
appreciate your understanding.
