on board RIP to perform this task.  In some non-intelligent printers, the RIPPING would have to be
performed by the sending workstation, as the printer would not be capable of performing the task.
Spooling
The sequence where the print job is sent from the workstation to the print queue on the file server.
Subnet Mask
The Subnet Mask is again a 32-bit address, however unlike the IP Address, the Subnet Mask is
usually the same sequence of numbers on all devices within the network.  The Subnet Mask
determines how the IP Address is read.
Telnet
Telnet is a program that is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite.  This utility can be used to send data
directly to a printer and can be used with the AR-NC1D network card to configure its internal
parameters.
Terminator
A terminator is a 50 ohm resistor that is placed at each end of a 10Base2 Ethernet cable to ensure
that signals do not bounce back and forth across the network and so cause errors.
Token Ring
On a Token Ring network, computers are situated on a continuous loop, on which a token is passed
from one computer to the next. Computers are centrally connected to a hub.  Computers use a
token to transmit data and must wait for a free token in order to transfer data.
WAN  (Wide Area Network)
Pronounced “wan”.  A geographically dispersed network formed by linking several computers, or
Local Area Networks (LAN), together over long distances.  WAN’s can connect systems across a
town, in different cities or in different regions of the world.
Web Browser
A Web Browser is a piece of software that can be used to browse the Internet. Examples of a web
browser are Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator.  The AR-NC1D network
card for the AR280/285/335 can be configured using an IP web browser.
Workstation
A computer on a network.
Zones
Single Apple Macintosh LocalTalk networks can be joined together into one larger network through
the use of zones.  Each connected sub-network is identified by a zone name.
