Licenses and activation keycodes
1.5.14 PAS and PRS licensing compatibility
As with other system components, the port monitors use the
accounting server to obtain use of particular licenses. However,
you also require a license for Printer Release Server (PRS), which
does not include the accounting server.
 ✎
Note: PRS 2.1 uses a different licensing scheme than PAS 2.5. PRS can
use PAS 2.5 port monitors, however, if you install a PAS 2.5 accounting
server, and assign proper licenses to the print servers
1.5.15 Administrative considerations
Given that you can distribute the individually-licensed PAS compo-
nents across several machines, it is possible that the licensing
scheme could fail.
For example, the accounting server could be unavailable when a
remote component starts up and requests a license. The compo-
nent could conclude that it is not licensed, and function accord-
ingly; if the accounting server restarts later, the component would
remain in the unlicensed state until restarted manually.
To reduce this risk, the individual components cache their assigned
license codes locally and use the cached information if the
accounting server is unavailable. Such cached licenses expire after
a certain number of days.

1.6 PAS and regional settings
System Manager and Accounts Manager are available in French,
German, Italian, and Spanish. You can adjust your Windows
regional settings in the Settings > Control Panel. See “Running the
Administrative Tools in other languages” on page 60
 for more
details.
Be aware that adjusting regional settings not only changes the lan-
guage in which these applications run, but it also affects currency
values and date/time display formats. These changes have an
impact on any reports you generate, and on the displays in some
application dialogs.

Installing core PAS components
This chapter describes how to install and configure core Printer
Accounting Server (PAS) components so that print jobs from
network workstations can be tracked in the accounts database.
Subsequent chapters in this manual describe other configura-
tion options in detail. This chapter does not explain how to use
the administrative and workstation tools.
2.1 Configuration overview
The installation of Printer Accounting Server (PAS) is divided
into three general tasks:
1. preparation
2. services and components installation
3. configuration
Once you have installed and configured Printer Accounting
Server, you can complete the setup by adding printing
accounts.

Printer Accounting Server: Administrator’s Guide
2.1.1 Component overview
Chapter 1 gives a detailed overview of the core Printer Accounting
Server components and other services that you can install with
PAS. Summary component descriptions appear in table 2.1.
Table  2.1:   Core PAS components.
2.1.2 Deciding on component destinations
Because Printer Accounting Server has a distributed architecture, it
is possible to install software components on a number of network
systems. You are restricted only by your software license and the
system requirements for the selected software component.
For information regarding license keycodes and serial numbers,
see “Licenses and activation keycodes” on page 21.
