PAS add-ons
1.4.6 NTS Services
NTS Services consists of the SM NTS Data Server service and the
SM NTS Controller. Together, these services manage Network
Transaction Station (NTS) devices on your network. The NTS Data
Server does not require a license; however, you require a print
server license to use NTS Controller.
NTS devices are vending units that control access to either a copier,
printers, or both a copier and printers. NTS Services interface with
the Accounting Server service so that vending activity at NTS
devices can be tracked in the database.
When NTS Services are installed without the SDR add-on, NTS
devices can control access to copiers only. When installed with the
SDR add-on, a single NTS device can control access to both a
copier and to printers.
1.4.7 Desktop Printing
Software Metrics (SM) desktop print monitors reside on network
workstations. Using the desktop print monitor, the PAS database
can track printing activity on printers configured to use LPT1: on
network workstations.
1.4.8 Secure Document Release (SDR)
The Secure Document Release (SDR) module adds document con-
trol capabilities on a print server where SM Print Monitors are
installed. SDR holds documents sent to the print server in a propri-
etary queue until the user releases them using one of two remote
mechanisms:
• hardware: the NTS device from XCP Inc.
• software: Software Metrics client software, Release Station,
installed on a network workstation
 ✎
Note: SDR functionality requires a separate license for each print server.

1.4.9 Release Station
Release Station is an add-on module that enables you to set up a
network workstation as a point of controlled document release.
Using Release Station, network users can release to the printers
documents held on an SDR-enabled print server.
Depending on the Custom Release Module (CRM) that you install
with the Release Station, the Release Station can be set up as a self-
serve or an operator-controlled workstation.
1.4.10 NetWare Print Server
The NetWare Print Server add-on enables you to control and track
printing on printers connected through a NetWare print server. The
NetWare print server requires a connection to the Accounting
Server service running on a Windows server. The NetWare print
server does not support the use of the SDR add-on.
Client Billing pop-up support is available for NetWare print servers
in the PAS 2.5 release.
1.4.11 UNIX Print Server
The UNIX Print Server add-on enables you to control and track
printing on printers connected through a UNIX print server. The
UNIX print server requires a connection to the Accounting Server
service running on a Windows server. The UNIX print server does
not support the use of the SDR add-on or Client Billing.
 ✎
Note: You can apply a PAS print server license to either a Windows,
UNIX< or NetWare print server.

Licenses and activation keycodes
1.5 Licenses and activation keycodes
PAS Accounting Server is available in both a Single Server edition
(SE) and an Enterprise edition (EE). The difference is that the Sin-
gle Server edition is primarily for smaller installations requiring
only one accounting server. For larger installations, or to support
any of the add-on modules, you require the Enterprise edition.
Activation keycodes and licensing
With PAS 2.5, component licensing takes the form of an accounting
server keycode that Software Metrics assigns based on your server
name, and serial numbers for Enterprise Edition add-ons.
Your installation automatically includes licensing for a single print
server (local or remote). If you decide to install the PAS print server
on more than one computer, you must purchase a license for each
additional server. The Administrative and Workstation applica-
tions, including Deposit Station, do not require licenses, so you can
install them on as many computers as necessary.
Printer Accounting Server components
The following table makes a distinction between required,
optional, and add-on software components. Some components
install automatically with PAS, residing initially on the server
though you can also install some of these components remotely.
You must manually select optional or add-on components.
