Page output to non-sort tray
This is the output that results from selecting page mode or from using
a non-custom driver.
There is no limit to the number of pages printed.
Pages are printed in order transmitted
Pages are stacked 1-N (reverse) order That is pages are stacked with
page 1 on top, successive pages below
Set output to non-sort tray
Custom drivers print sets to the non-sort tray by transmitting the
pages repetitively in N-1 order.
Maximum number of pages per copy is equal to the N-1 page count
limit
Maximum number of copies is 999
Group Output to non-sort tray
Custom drivers print groups to the non-sort tray by transmitting each
page with copy count in N-1 order.
Maximum number of pages is equal to the N-1 page count limit
Maximum number of copies is 999.
D. Language
Rendering
There are 2 complete languages covered by this specification, Post-
Script, PCL-5e.
PostScript and PCL5e duplicate the functionality of HP Laserjet 5
series, operating in Laserjet 3 mode except for resolution.
The PostScript renderer includes 35 Type 1 fonts, the PCL-5e
renderer includes 45 fonts plus line printer.
The HP-GL stroke font is supported.
PCL5e is not fully compatible since PCL5e requires 600dpi or 300 dpi
and AR-5132 only supports 400dpi.
E. Emulation
Selection
The emulation to be used in rendering data can be selected automat-
ically or by a set of predefined rules.
Automatic emulation switching is accomplished by selecting the
rendering emulation based on selected features of the data stream
for:
PostScript
PCL-5e
1. Emulation Selection Method
Sharp supplied printer drivers and utilities send emulation data that
can be decoded. It is possible that there are some poorly behaved
applications that is not supply data such that the format can be unam-
biguously selected.
Results of printing from data streams that dont match the available
types is uncertain.
In addition to automatic selection, the printing system can be con-
figured to:
Use any single emulation unless commanded in job stream
Select automatically based on data sensed (default)
F. Port
Selection
The data source for printing and the source for printer administration
can be selected independently and automatically.
Switching printing from one port to the other can occur between jobs
according to the following configurable priority schemes:
Round Robin, switch between jobs
Round Robin, switch when the present port is idle (default)
depend on PJL (default PS)
depend on PJL (default PCL)
Use only parallel port
Use only Network port
G.  Contention Between Printing and Copying
Contention between printing and copying is managed by the copier
The copier can be switched manually to print mode. The copier will
automatically switch to print mode after a configurable idle period and
after a print job has been started in the print controller
Printing may be interrupted by copying.
There is 1 setting in the copier controller for contention:
Copy idle time before
printing starts/resumes
10-240 seconds (in copier)
(60 seconds is the default )
If a print job is interrupted, action depends on the kind of finishing in
use:
Printing to a sorter: The present page is printed to the rest of the
sorter trays
Duplex: Printing continues until any duplex storage is emptied.
There is 1 setting in the printer controller for contention. The idle time
in the printer configuration menu until copy mode resumes can be
adjusted
At the conclusion of a print job the copier returns to copy mode after 3
seconds.
H. Printer
Administration/Status/Configuration
The printer system can be configured using the copier front panel in
printer configuration mode.

J.  Front Panel Interaction
The Copier/Printer front panel has 2 modes of operation Copier mode
and printer mode.
In copier mode limited information about the status of the printer
function is available.
The control panel can be switched to printer configuration mode by a
key operation.
Generally the printer control panel is a mult-line 1/4 VGA character
oriented display with numeric entry and list selection.
In addition to configuring printing parameters the printer control panel
can:
1.  Set the NIC card IP address
2.  Print a demonstration print/capabilities page
3.  Restore the printing system to default configuration (except
serial # and NIC)
4.  Reset the printing system to power on configuration

Driver localization include rearranging paper size selection or chang-
ing the default selection depending on requirements.
B. Operator
Interface
1.  Windows Driver
Installation:
Standard Windows software installation for the
software. The printer responds with Plug and Play
data to make installation automatic from the parallel
port.
Operation:
Uses standard Windows 95 printer driver elements.
2. Macintosh Printer Drivers
Installation:  Standard Macintosh installer for the software. The
supported physical interface is Ethertalk via an exist-
ing Macintosh Ethernet network.
Operation:
All image options and operating modes are set from
the host.
(6) Compatibility
A.  Compatibility with PostScript Printers
For the PostScipt or PCL-5 output from a typical printer driver the
5132 printing system will print essentially the same output as would
be produced on a Laserjet 5si when both are set to page printer
mode, single copy.
Compatibility does not include PJL commands.
Compatibility does not include small margin differences, differences in
font rendering due to different underlying font families, or differences
in default screening and transfer functions.
B.  Compatibility with HP PostScript
The target for Roman PostScript compatibility is Adobe PostScript as
implemented in the Laserjet 5si
The margins, default screening, and underlying font data may differ.
C.  Compatibility with PCL5e Printers
The target for PCL5e compatibility is the HP Laserjet 5si with printing
set to 300 dpi.
Compatibility is restricted to the general appearance of pages and
page contents. There may be substantial stylistic differences caused
by the resolution difference of 400 vs 600/300 dpi
(7) Connectivity
Connectivity formats include both data and control.
A.  Basic Unit Connectivity
1. Data Formats
Data Formats are:
PostScript Level 2
PCL-5e
2. Job Control Format
The primary job control format is HP PJL, accepted on the active data
port in band with PCL5e and PostScript.
The job control format for PostScript jobs are contained in the Post-
Script data stream.

(8)  Print Quality
A.  Print Quality Modes
Three print quality modes are supported:
400
×
 400 dpi
400
×
 400 dpi RET
Default ON
400
×
 400 dpi  Toner mode
Default OFF
B. RET (Resolution Enhancement Technology)
The RET reduces zigzag in characters and curves to provide pseudo-increased resolution.
The RET makes the print quality of characters and slant lines better than the engine resolution. The position and size of each dot is adjusted to
provide smooth curves. This function exerts no effect on the parallel and horizontal lines.
RET realizes a high resolution of 1200dpi by dividing one dot into 3 (changing the lighting pulse time of laser).
C. Toner save mode
The toner save mode prints the outlines of black background sections with black lines and the black background sections with half tone (not only the
characters but also all print images) to save toner consumption.
The toner save mode is used to reduce toner consumption compared with the normal print mode toner consumption, and it is not for increasing print
speed. It is generally used for draft printing. To reduce toner consumption, the outlines of characters are reproduced without change, and the black
density inside the outlines is reduced.
