indust rial mains plug or f or PERMANENTLY

prot ect ion, e.g. f uses or circuit  breakers, is f ully 
specif ied in t he inst allat ion inst ruct ions.  

If  reliance is placed on prot ect ion in t he building 
inst allat ion, t he inst allat ion inst ruct ions shall so 
st at e, except  t hat  f or not  via an indust rial mains 
plug or f or PERMANENTLY CONNECTED 
APPARATUS t he building inst allat ion shall be 
regarded as providing prot ect ion in accordance

Zx.1 General 
This sub-clause specif ies requirement s f or 
prot ect ion against  excessive sound pressure 
f rom 
personal music players t hat  are closely coupled 
t o t he ear. It  also specif ies requirement s f or 
earphones and headphones int ended f or use w it h 
personal music players.  

 

A personal music player is a port able 

 



is designed t o allow  t he user t o list en t o 

recorded  

or broadcast  sound or video; and 



primarily uses headphones or earphones t hat  

can  

be w orn in or on or around t he ears; and 



allow s t he user t o w alk around w hile in use.  

NOTE 1 Examples are hand-held or body-w orn port able CD 
players, MP3 audio players, mobile phones w it h MP3 t ype 
features, PDA’s or similar equipment. 

 

A personal music player and earphones or 
headphones int ended t o be used w it h personal 
music players shall comply w it h t he 
requirement s of  t his sub-clause. 

 

The requirement s in t his sub-clause are valid f or 
music or video mode only.  

 

The requirement s do not  apply:  



w hile t he personal music player is connect ed 

t o  

an ext ernal amplif ier; or 



w hile t he headphones or earphones are not  

used. 

NOTE 2 An ext ernal amplif ier is an amplif ier w hich is not  part  
of  t he personal music player or the list ening device, but  
w hich is 
int ended t o play t he music as a st andalone music player.

NOTE 3 Professional equipment  is equipment  sold t hrough
