4-5.  FOCUS-SHIFT/ FLANGE BACK (f F) CHECK/ ADJUSTMENT
In this section, the check/adjustment of focus-shift, which arises from the change of the focal length by zooming, is described.
Equipment
•  1000 mm Collimator
•  Flange Back Tester
• A-mount Attachment
•  Flange Back Gauge (43.50 mm)
•  Adhesive bond (B-50)
4-5-1. Focus-shift/ Flange Back (f F) Check
1. Preparations
1) Perform 4-3-1 Preparations of  4-3. OPTICAL AXIS CHECK/ADJUSTMENT .
2. Focus-shift Check
1)  Set the zoom to the TELE end.
2) Set to 44.56 mm  by rotating the knob of flange back tester.
3)  Focus by rotating the focus ring from the near end side.
4)  Change the focal length and check that the flange back value at each focal length satisfies the specification below.
Note:
Do not rotate the focus ring.
Specification:
Focal Length f (mm)
Flange Back Value f F (mm)
16 to 35
44.48 to 44.64
 Table
4-5-1
5)  If the flange back value (f F) of the checking lens does not satisfy the specification in Table 4-5-1, perform  4-5-2. Focus-shift/Flange
Back (f F) Adjustment .
3.  Flange Back (f F) Check
1)  Set the zoom to the WIDE end (16 mm) and the focus to the over infinity end and then check that the flange back satisfies the specifi-
cation.
2)  Set the zoom to the TELE end (35 mm) and the focus to the over infinity end and then check that the flange back satisfies the specifi-
cation.
Specification: Over infinity end
Focal Length f (mm)
Flange Back Value f F (mm)
16 (WIDE end)
44.68 to 44.73
35 (TELE end)

4-5-2. Focus-shift/Flange Back (f F) Adjustment
1. Focus-shift Adjustment
1)  Remove the focus rubber ring.
2)  Set the zoom to the TELE end.
3)  Rotate the focus ring to over infinity side and by turning further from the infinity end set it at the position where the decentering roller
(decentering, no decentering) can be seen through the hole for decentering roller.
4)  Loosen three screws fixing the decentering roller (decentering, no decentering).
5)  Set the zoom to the WIDE end and the focus to the over infinity end.
6)  Focus by rotating the knob of flange back tester. At this moment, read the flange back value.
7) Add 0.275  to the read flange back value. Then, rotate the knob of flange back tester so that this added value can be achieved.

Example) In case that the read value is 44.67: 44.67 + 0.275 = 44.945 (mm)
8)  Set the zoom to the TELE end and focus by changing the position of the 2nd lens block.

Change the position of 2nd lens block. (Shift the decentering roller or decentering roller (no decentering) along the lead groove.)
Note:
Do not rotate the decentering roller.
9)  Adjust by repeating steps 5) to 8) so that the focus at the WIDE end becomes equal to that at the TELE end.

Then, tighten the screws loosened in step 4).
10) After finishing the focus-shift and the optics axis adjustment, apply the bond (B-50) to the decentering roller (decentering, no center-
ing) and the 2nd lens holder.

2.  Flange Back (f F) Adjustment
1)  Set the zoom to the WIDE end and the focus to the over infinity end.
2)  Focus by rotating the knob of flange back tester. At this moment, read the flange back value.
3)  Calculate the amount of increase or decrease of back adjustment washer by the formula below, using the result derived from step 2).
Amount of increase or decrease of back adjustment washer (mm) =
Flange back f F (measured value) of focal length (16 mm) at over infinity end - 44.705 mm
In case that the amount of back adjustment washer is negative (-): Decrease thickness of the back adjustment washer.
In case that the amount of back adjustment washer is positive (+): Increase thickness of the back adjustment washer.

4-6.  FOCUS-SHIFT CHECK/ADJUSTMENT (APERTURE (AMOUNT OF SPHERICAL ABER-
RATION))
In this section, the check/adjustment of focus-shift, which arises from the change of aperture, is described.
Equipment
•  1000 mm Collimator
•  Flange Back Tester
• A-mount Attachment
•  Flange Back Tester (43.50 mm)
•  Aberration Measuring Cap 77 mm (1635) (Equivalent to F8)
4-6-1. Focus-shift (Aperture (Amount of spherical aberration)) Check
1. Preparations
1) Perform 4-3-1 Preparations  of  4-3. OPTICAL AXIS CHECK/ADJUSTMENT .
2. Checking Method
1)  Set the zoom to WIDE end.
2)  Set the focus to infinity (index) or near infinity.
3)  Rotate the knob of flange back tester to achieve good focus, read the flange back value. (Make the value to Aw.)
4)  Set the aberration measuring cap (F8 equivalent, for WIDE) on the tip of lens as shown in the Fig. 4-6-1.
5)  Rotate the knob of flange back tester to achieve good focus, read the flange back value. (Make the value to Bw.)
6)  According to the result in step 3) and 5), calculate amount of focus-shift (F8 equivalent, for WIDE) using the following formula.
Focus-shift (F8 equivalent, for WIDE) (mm) = (result in step 5) (Bw)) - (result in step 3) (Aw))
7)  Set the zoom to TELE end.
8)  Set the focus to infinity (index) or near infinity.
9)  Rotate the knob of flange back tester to achieve good focus, read the flange back value. (Make the value to At.)
10) Set the aberration measuring cap (F8 equivalent, for TELE) on the tip of lens as shown in the Fig.4-6-1.
11) Rotate the knob of flange back tester to achieve good focus, read the flange back value. (Make the value to Bt.)
12) According to the result in step 9) and 11), calculate amount of focus-shift (F8 equivalent, for TELE) using the following formula.
Focus-shift (F8 equivalent, for TELE) (mm) = (result in step 11) (Bt)) - (result in step 9) (At))
