Desk Units
(AR-D13, D14, and MU1)
Functions/Description of Operation
The take-up rollers for the trays are in the lowered position when the tray is inserted. MCLUM, TLUM1, and
TLUM2 provide lift for the paper trays. The trays lift until MCLUD, TLUD1 or TLUD2 are activated respectively.
Transport motor (TMM) provides drive for paper feed separation, and take-up rollers. Separation rollers rotate in
the opposite direction of feed rollers if multiple feeding occurs.
The multi-purpose tray on all units must be set up using Sim 40-12 in the ARM350/450 or Size adjustment A from
PCU diagnostics for ARP350/450.
Detection of Remaining Amount of Paper
The paper indicator on the LCD message display indicates the amount of paper remaining in the multi-purpose
drawer and 2000 sheet tray.
The multi-purpose drawer uses sensor MCSPD to detect the remaining quantity of paper. When the tray is
inserted into the machine, the sensor is deactivated. If the tray begins to rise but the sensor is still not activated,
the full level is detected. If the tray rises and the sensor is activated, the middle level is detected. If the tray rises
and the sensor activates then deactivates, the lowest level of remaining paper is detected.
If MCLUD is activated and MCPED is not activated, a paper empty condition is displayed for the multi-purpose
drawer. This same scenario occurs for the 2000 sheet tray as well with sensors TPED1 and TPED2.

Tiger Laser unit
The Tiger LSU is an improvement over Cougar. Because of the number of mirrors in Cougar it was necessary to
have a high speed, 48000-rpm. It is only possible to use an air bearing at this speed and this resulted in high level
noise. Also it took a relatively long time to ramp up to full working speed, approximately 6 seconds. The time taken
for the paper to reach resist was about 3 seconds consequently the polygon motor could not be switched off
between every job. The motor only switched off at power save, sleep mode or when commanded in Sim 26-54.
(see figure 1)
In Tiger the polygon motor runs at a much lower speed 22,000 rpm, so takes less time to ramp up to full speed, 2
seconds. This means that the ramp up time is less than the time taken by the paper to reach resist therefore it is
possible to switch the polygon motor off after every print job. Also because of the slower motor speed oil bearings
can be used. These two facts make the operation of the Tiger LSU much quieter than the Cougar
Important:
The PCU and laser unit for the ARP350 and ARM350 are not interchangeable with the PCU and laser unit of
the ARP450 and ARM450.
