The PrintLog Accounting Server (PAS) UNIX print server 
enables accounting on UNIX print servers by monitoring print-
ing and reporting printer usage to a PAS accounting server.

This guide is intended to help you to install and configure a 
PAS UNIX print server. It assumes you are familiar with UNIX 
and Windows network administration. 

Before installing a PAS UNIX print server, configure core PAS 
components on your network. For information on installing 
and configuring PrintLog Accounting Server, please see the PAS 
Administrator’s Guide.

Note: Any references to Windows servers in this document apply to 
both Windows NT and Windows 2000 (non-clustering) operating 
system.

The modular design of Equitrac products enables the software 
to be flexible to suit a range of needs, based on their configura-
tion. However, it is important to note that some configurations 
have an effect on the operation of other software modules.

• Network print-tracking and charging for print devices 

shared on a UNIX print server

• Data Stream Interpreter page counting

• Secure Document Release (SDR)
• Use of pop-up billing codes
• User authentication for Macintosh clients
• User notification via pop-up
• PJL, NPA, and Job counter page counting methods
• The “Text” option of the Data Stream Interpreter is limited to 

60 lines of text

The PAS UNIX print server is licensed per server. Each server uses 
up a print server license on the PAS 2.5.2 accounting server. If the 
number of print servers exceeds the number of licenses you have, 
the unlicensed servers will not record any printing activity.

Before you install PAS UNIX Print Server, you should be familiar 
with the following terms: 

• a logical definition that represents a physical printer 

on a UNIX server.

• the final print queue component on Solaris

• the final print queue component on Linux

• information about a logical printer definition stored 

in the PAS database to track usage. A registration 
includes a printer name, a user-defined description 
and the printer’s assigned costs.

physical printer • the actual printing device.

The PAS UNIX print server integrates a UNIX server with the PAS 
print tracking environment. This integration is accomplished by 
installing a number of cooperating software components on your 
network. The following table gives an overview of the required 
components:

• communicates with the Accounting Server service on 

the Windows NT server

• enables you to set up SMRemoteDBServer and to con-

figure printers

• wrapper script for the process that communicates with 

the printers

• functions as a Windows NT/2000 service
• coordinates the activity of all PAS components
• handles account management requests; controls data-

base access

• calculates charges, assigns them to correct accounts

• stores information about printing transactions, print-

ing accounts and balances, printers, printer costs, and 
scheduled events

Enables the system administrator to:
• configure and monitor Windows server components
• assign costs to printers and copiers

Enables the financial administrator to:
• manage user, department and billing code accounts
• perform account transactions
• produce reports on printer and account activity
• set up automated database maintenance events

The following diagram illustrates one way in which you can config-
ure PAS components and administrative applications on your net-
work:
