Disc Size Judgment
The disc size, 12cm or 8cm, is judged to change over the spindle servo gain.
(1) DVD disc
(a) DVD disc is loaded and chucked, then immediately after the spindle motor started,
whether the time from spindle speed 0rpm up to about 1400rpm is longer than
about 0.28 second.
(b) Whether disc judging information of the read disc data is 12cm or 8cm.
From the above two factors, a disc is judged as follows:

(2) CD disc

From the above two factors, a disc is judged as follows:

In either case of DVD or CD, if the disc (spindle motor) speed-up time is below about
80ms, the controller judges that no disc is present.

SL (Single Layer) or DL (Dual Layer) Disc Judgment
For the DVD disc, SL or DL disc is judged as follows:
(1) Reflected light quantity of DVD optical pickup laser beam, and DC (peak) value of PI
(pull in) signal level.
To judge the PI signal level, a focus search is executed after disc chucking, and the peak
value of the obtained PI signal (DPD-PI) is held in the IC771 (NJM3403), then it is
entered to the drive microcomputer IC136, *¡P, and internal A/D converter measures
the PI signal level for judgment.
(2) Of the data read from DVD disc, the reflectivity written to the ID (Identification Data).
From the above two factors, a disc is judged as follows:

The initial result of DVD disc judgment is effective in a period from focus servo ON to
reading of ID reflectivity from disc, and after that, the last result (disc ID reflectivity) becomes
effective.
The laser output of DVD optical pickup is larger during DL disc playing than that during SL
disc playing.
