■ Digital Connection to Audio Equipment or MD Player without a Dolby
Digital Decoder
• Audio CD or VIDEO CD
Play the disc as you normally would, with the audio mode set to “L+R” (see
page 81). With a digital connection, audio of a disc recorded with DTS
sounds abnormal in this case.
• DVD Video Disc
The digital connection illustrated above shows connection to audio equipment
that is not equipped with a decoder. Because of this, it cannot produce any
sound when playing a DVD whose audio track is recorded in Dolby Digital (5.1
channel), Dolby Surround (Pro Logic), DTS or MPEG Audio. To play the audio on
such a DVD, you must configure a digital connection with an audio processor or
amplifier equipped with a decoder for the type of audio on the DVD you are
attempting to play. (See page 27.) If you do not have an audio processor or
amplifier equipped with the proper decoder, use a 2-channel analogue (Down
Mix) connection. (See pages 24 and 49.) Note that discs recorded with linear
PCM audio should play normally using the digital connection illustrated above.
Digital Connection to an MD to Record a CD
When you are using a digital connection to record the contents of a CD to
an MD, the track numbers of the CD may not match the track numbers
recorded to the MD.

■ Analogue Connection
• This Player is equipped with the Dolby Digital (5.1ch)/ Dolby Surround (Pro
Logic)/MPEG Audio decoder as standard. Connecting an amplifier with
5.1ch input jacks to your Player provides richer, more powerful surround
sound.
After making the above connection
1
Set the “SPEAKER” in “SPEAKER SETUP” to “5ch” or “5.1ch”. (See page
56.)
2
Set the “DELAY” in “SPEAKER SETUP” according to your speaker
position. (See page 58.)

SETTING UP
Connecting to Audio Equipment
• This Player cannot be connected to an amplifier or processor that does not have
5.1ch input jacks.
• With an analogue connection, audio cannot be produced from a DVD recorded
with DTS, so you should use an optical digital connection to play such discs.
• Refer to the operation manual for the processor or amplifier for information about
connecting to it.
■ Digital Connection
• Connecting an amplifier with a Dolby Digital/DTS/MPEG Audio digital surround
processor or a Dolby Digital/DTS/MPEG Audio digital surround decoder to
your Player’s optical digital jack provides richer, more powerful audio play.
• To use DTS digital surround, use the Disc Menu screen (page 96) or the
Function control screen (page 74) to select DTS audio.
After making the above connection
1
Set the “SPEAKER” in “SPEAKER SETUP” to “2ch” (see page 56).
2
Set the “
DIGITAL” in “AUDIO SETUP” to “BITSTREAM” (see page 49).
• You need to purchase a commercially available optical digital cable to make the
connection described above.
• To play a disc recorded with DTS, you need to use DTS processor or amplifier.
• This connection is not possible if the processor or amplifier to which you want to
connect does not have an optical digital input jack.
• Refer to the operation manual for the processor or amplifier for information about
connecting to it.
