1-10. Copy guard system
Video and audio output signals from DVD player are normally analog signals. DVD player
is able to add a copy guard signal to output signals to prevent them from being copied by
VTR.
Whether or not a copy guard signal is added, is determined by the copy guard control data
recorded in disc.
DVD player has a copy guard function on output signals according to this control data.
1-11. Audio system
The following system is used for DVD-Video.
1) Linear PCM audio signal
This is a non-compressed digital signal and is excellent in reproduction, it has a large
amount of data and a high transfer rate.
[Linear PCM]
Linear PCM comes in 6 kinds, each being combined with
(1) Sampling frequency:
48kHz, 96kHz and
(2) Number of quantum bit:
16bit, 20bit, 24bit.
As audio signal is smaller in quantity of data than video signal, it can be used in non-
compression mode.

2) Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio compression and MPEG audio compression.
These 2 systems are different in format, but both are a sub-band compression system to
divide and compress the original audio signal according to frequency components.
This system utilizes the human characteristic of the sense of hearing to reduce the amount
of data, so the transfer rate is rather low.
[Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio compression]
In the digital multi-channel system, the maximum number of audio channels is 5.1
•  Forward 3 channels (high-frequency band a full range)
•  Backward 2 channels (high-frequency band a full range)
•  Sub-woofer - Low-frequency band channel (this is called 0.1 channel)
Digital Surround system uses this 5.1 channel for 3-dimensional sound effects.
[MPEG audio compression]
MPEG audio compression comes in 2 systems, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.
MPEG-2 is an expanded MPEG-1 and is interchangeable with MPEG-1.
(MPEG-1:  This is a system to compress audio data of maximum 2 channels.)
The MPEG-2 system is the same as MPEG-1 system except that it has the following 3
functions.
1)  Multi-channel (used)
2)  Multi-language (not used)
3)  Low sampling frequency (not used)
Of the above 3 functions which have been added, the multi-channel function is used with
the DVD video system for 3-dimentional sound effects.
The multi-languages is a function to record DVD's audio signals on 8 tracks in different
languages, while the low sampling frequency is a function developed for transmission
systems having a low transfer rate, so these functions are not used with the DVD video
system.
1-12. Parental control
Parental control is a function to compare "parental level set in soft program" and "parental
level set by user" to judge which level is suited for the user to play video and audio signals.
Note 1) When the parental level set in soft program is different from that set by
user, the latter takes precedence over the former.
Note 2) This function is optional for both soft and hard programs, so the player
is not always operated with the parental level set in disc.
Note 3) DVP-S7000 can be used for setting parental control.

1-13. Playback area control function
This function is used to play (or not to play) DVD disc in specific areas. By using this
function, DVD disc recorded with a new motion picture cannot be played before it is
publicly offered or in areas where it is being offered in public.
Areas are 6 regions in the world, each having a region No.
DVD player has only one region No. which cannot be changed by users.
Note) A number of region No. can be set in DVD disc.
DVD player compares its own region No. with the region No. set in the disc to judge
whether or not the program can be played.  When it is judged "not played", it is so displayed
on TV screen.
