1-8. Standard functions of DVD-Video player
To keep the interchangeability of DVD-Video player, special functions and operation
systems are provided as its format.
1) Video
• MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 playback function
Analog video signal output (composite signal)
• Aspect ratio select function
DVD-Video disc is able to record video signals with l6:9 aspect ratio.
This function is used to convert wide video signal into letter box or pan scan video
signal when video signals with 16:9 ratio are played with former type of TV (4:3
ratio).
• Automatic picture stop function
This function is used to play still pictures (frame playback) automatically at any point
set on the disc.
It is mainly used for taking photographs, etc.
• Direct access prohibition function
Direct access is a method of playback of desired programs on the disc using the search
mode or fast-forward mode, instead of playing from the beginning.  When playing
common type of discs, this function is convenient because desired programs can be
played quickly for retrieval or other purposes.
But, when playing a game soft disc program, it is not desirable (not attractive) to play
an intended position (for example, a position where an answer is played) quickly.
In such a case, a direct access to intended position on the disc can be prohibited by
using this function.
In the direct access prohibition zone on the disc, programs can be played in normal
playback mode.

Any playback
mode can be
used.
Only the normal
playback mode
is used.
Any playback
mode can be
used.

• Multi-angle playback function
Multi-angle is a portion of disc where the same subject is recorded from two or more
camera angles.
When playing such a disc, a desired angle can be selected during playback.
DVP-S7000 indicates
"ANGLE"
on the indicate tube when the disc comes to a
position where angles can be selected.
2) Audio
DVD-Video uses Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Linear PCM audio system.  DVP-S7000
is designed for playback with both systems.
3) Playback control
• Title selection and playback function
This function is used to search titles selected from menu or direct keys for playback.
• Auto set start function
This function is used to start operation according to the data of auto set start, when a
disc is inserted.
• Menu call function
This function is used to call title menu and route menu.
• Menu language selection
When a menu is recorded in two or more languages in disc, a desired language can be
selected.
• Menu operation function
Any menus can be operated for selection and execution.
4) Control playback by command
• Disc command
Player can be operated according to sub-titles displayed on menu.
5) Subtitle playback
• Some discs are recorded with subtitle independently of video tracks.
Subtitle may be recorded in two or more languages.
Subtitle languages can be selected or turned OFF from the player.

1-9. Compression system used for DVD disc
1) Video compression system
DVD-Video uses MPEG-2 digital video compression system for recording of video
signal.
Video signal used for compression is a component video signal (Y+chroma difference
signal).
When video signal is compressed, the component signal has a number of merits in
comparison with the composite signal.
(1) Chroma difference signal has such a merit that deterioration of picture quality is
little noticeable even when the data size is reduced (little visual effects).
(2) Picture is free from dot disturbance caused by color sub-carrier signal.
(3.58 or 4.43 MHz)
Note) Dot disturbance will occur when video output signal is composite signal.
Dot disturbance can be eliminated by using S-terminal for connection
with TV.
Data transfer efficiency can be improved by changing the transfer rate to obtain high
quality pictures for a given data size.
Transfer rate
Transfer rate is an amount of digital data which are sent in 1 second, it is a factor to
determine picture quality.
The maximum transfer rate of DVD-Video is 10.08Mbps.
Note) The maximum transfer rate of data tracks such as video track, etc. is
9.8Mbps.
DVP-S7000 has a function to indicate the transfer rate (bit rate) of video data.
Variable transfer rate
When encoding (MPEG) the video data, the transfer rate can be changed according to the
complexity of picture.
This function is used when many video data are processed like DVD-Video.
Fixed transfer rate
Regular amount of data can always be obtained regardless of the complexity of picture.
In the case of fixed transfer rate, complex video data are omitted for a data transfer rate
which has been set.
The picture quality is deteriorated by the amount of the data omitted.  But the amount of data
is sufficient for simple data.
Note) Data can be processed easily in comparison with the variable transfer
rate.
