The SM Printer Gateway
1.2 The SM Printer Gateway
The SM Printer Gateway performs two functions on the NetWare
server: printer control and printer tracking.
server: printer control and printer tracking.
1.2.1 Printer control
On a NetWare server, the SM Printer Gateway monitors and con-
trols printing activity. It prevents unauthorized users from access-
ing network printers. When the SM Printer Gateway receives a
print request, it checks with the accounting server to ensure that
the user sending the request has a valid printing account. The
accounting server checks the PAS database for the administrator-
defined list of valid printing accounts and indicates when print jobs
are authorized to proceed.

1.2.2 Printer tracking
The SM Printer Gateway also monitors printing traffic to determine
the size and attributes—such as page color, page size, and so on—
of each print job. This detailed information is passed back to the
accounting server service. Based on the print job’s page count and
document attributes, and the administrator-defined costs assigned
to the destination printer, the accounting server calculates printing
charges and levies them against the appropriate printing account.

1.2.3 Interaction with NetWare
The following diagram illustrates how PAS, NetWare and printing
components interact when a print request is generated from a net-
work workstation so that printing is tracked in the PAS database:
