PAS NetWare Print Server: Installation Guide
1
1.
PAS NetWare Overview
1.1 Introduction
The PrintLog Accounting Server (PAS) NetWare print server
enables accounting on NetWare print servers by monitoring
printing and reporting printer usage to a PAS accounting server.
This guide is intended to help you to install and configure a
PAS NetWare print server. It is assumed that you are familiar
with NetWare and Windows network administration.
Before installing a PAS NetWare print server, configure PAS
Enterprise Edition (EE) on your network. For information on
installing and configuring PAS, please see the PAS Administra-
tor’s Guide
.
  ✎
Note: Any references to Windows servers in this document apply to
both Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems.
The PAS NetWare print server supports:
• Network print-tracking and charging for both NDPS and
Queue-based print devices shared on a NetWare print
server
• NetWare NDPS and Queue-based printing
• Use of pop-up billing codes (except for Macintosh)
• Use of pop-up for Professional Client billing (except for
Macintosh).
• User authentication for Macintosh clients through the use
of SM Macintosh Services through an existing LPD setup

What the PAS NetWare print server does not support
• Secure Document Release (SDR)
• Use of NTS devices for secure document release
• Pop-up billing codes for the Macintosh
• User notification via pop-up message
• PJL, NPA, and Job Counter page counting methods
• The ‘Text’ option of the Data Stream Interpreter is limited to
60 lines of text
1.1.1 Server licensing
The PAS accounting server is available in both a Single Server edi-
tion (SE) and an Enterprise edition (EE). In most cases, PAS prod-
ucts are licensed per server, though some components, such as
Client Billing, are licensed per seat.
The license code that accompanies your accounting server also
enables one print server. The print server may reside locally on the
same machine as the accounting server, or on a remote machine,
regardless of whether the machine is running Windows, NetWare,
or UNIX. Once you have assigned the available print server license,
you must purchase additional licenses for additional print servers.
1.1.2 License verification
All license verification takes place on the accounting server. System
Manager validates all existing licenses, and adds, deletes, or reas-
signs licenses as needed. All components such as print servers and
Client Billing (including Professional Client Billing) clients must
therefore contact the accounting server themselves to obtain the
use of a particular license.
Verify component licensing
1. On the PAS accounting server, open System Manager.
2. Select the
Accounting Server > Software
 node.
3. In the right pane, click the
License assignments
 tab to look for
an unassigned Print Server license. If none is available, you
must enter a license code for an additional print server, or
reassign an existing license.

Introduction
1.1.3 NetWare terminology
Before you install PAS NetWare Print Server, you should be familiar
with the following terms:
Management
workstation
a Windows machine that manages the NetWare server
NDPS
NetWare Distributed Print Services. Novell software that
takes advantage of bidirectional printer capabilities to
manage network printers on a NetWare server.
NDPS Manager
when loaded, the NDPSM module can manage a number of
Printer Agents
PAS printer
registration
information about a logical printer definition stored in the
PAS database to track usage. A registration includes a
printer name, a user-defined description and the printer’s
assigned costs.
Physical Printer the actual printing device. Represented on a NetWare print
server by a Printer Agent
Printer Agent
a logical definition that represents a physical printer on a
NetWare server. A Printer Agent handles print job opera-
tions on the server.
Printer Gateway the software that provides the link between NDPS and
other print protocols, such as LPR. A printer gateway com-
municates with printers and manages printer port connec-
tions. The Software Metrics Printer Gateway performs the
additional task of communicating with the PAS accounting
server service on a network Windows NT server.

1.1.4 The PAS NetWare print server
The PAS NetWare print server integrates a NetWare server with PAS
print tracking features. This integrates a number of cooperating
software components on your network, as shown in the following
table.
NetWare server components
Novell NDPS
• supports the SM Printer Gateway
SM Printer
Gateway
• communicates with both the printers and the account-
ing server service on the Windows NT server
SM Queue
Service
• communicates with NetWare NDS Queues and the
accounting server service on the Windows NT server
Windows server components—run transparently on a Windows NT/2000
server
SM Accounting
Server
• functions as a Windows NT service
• coordinates the activity of all PAS components
• handles account management requests; controls data-
base access
• calculates charges, assigns them to appropriate print-
ing account
SM PAS
Database
• stores information about printing transactions, print-
ing accounts and balances, printers, printer costs, and
scheduled events
Administrative applications—remotely administer server components
Novell NetWare
Administrator
Allows the system administrator to:
• create and configure NDPS print server objects
SM System
Manager
Allows the system administrator to:
• configure and monitor Software Metrics server com-
ponents
• assign costs to printers and copiers
