Description
As can be seen from the preceding diagrams it is possible to use a number of different
connection topologies. This depends on the customers existing network configurations. If no
current installation or network is present then diagram one is the easier to configure.
To demonstrate this configuration following is a detailed installation description that uses
available hardware and has been tested.
Hardware requirement
UP600/700
PC with Back Office Software.
DSL Router inc modem (D-Link – DI-604+) includes wireless but can be disabled.
DSL Modem (BT/Cable Supplied or D-Link DSL-300G+)
ADSL Line (POS End) Static IP Address
ADSL Line (PC End)  Static IP Address
It should be noted that at the PC end can be an ISDN or Dial up connection can be used as
long as it is “Static IP”. This will however reduce speed from a ADSL link.
Configuration
To understand how this set up works it is necessary to introduce some basic principles of IP
networking.
On the internet all connections made are made using the 'Transmission Control Protocol'
(TCPIP protocol IP for short). This protocol takes the form of addresses in the form n.n.n.n
where n is any integer upto and including 255. Therefore an IP addresses could be
81.234.87.145
These addresses are issued by Internet Service providers (ISP) and are commonly issued
when a connection is made to the internet. For example if you dial the internet via your ISP
when a connection is established your ISP gives your PC an IP address that you use for the
duration of the connection. If you disconnect and re-connect it is likely you will be given a
different IP address. This is called “Dynamic IP Addressing” (DHCP). From this information we
can deduce that if someone wanted to contact us using our IP address they would need to
know what it was, if we then disconnected and re-connected to our ISP we would have to
provide the information again. This is not practical in the business world.
To eliminate the need to keep informing people every time we connect to the internet we can
use “Static IP” this is an IP address that once given to a location or connection stays with it.
We must use this for our type of connection. Only certain ISP allow the use of static IP, but it
is essential this is obtained to provide the connection discussed in this document. Static IP
can currently be obtained from Demon or BT Broadband (Business Connection Only).
In addition to this we must remember that the Embedded POS cannot connect directly to the
internet and it uses “Private IP” addresses, these are addresses designated for use NOT on
the internet but internally at companies.
Firstly lets look at the configuration diagram which includes all the IP addresses settings
required. Then we can detail how the system works.
