ADPCM
The ADPCM is one of the methods that are used to compress the audio data. As waveform of the audio signal generally changes continuously, the neighboring sampled data
are very much similar each other. Therefore, only the difference between a data and the previous data is obtained and only the difference is compressed to reduce the data
amount. This is the so-called ADPCM method. When the same number of bits are used for quantization, the ADPCM has better sound quality and less data than the PCM but
the recording and playback circuits of the ADPCM become more complicated than those of the PCM. As the ADPCM adopts the non-reversible compression, it cannot
reproduce its original sound quality, but the sound reproduction quality is far superior compared when the sound quality is compared with the sampling system using the same
number of bits after compression. The ADPCM is mainly used for communication of audio data (for example, telephone and others). When sound is transmitted and received,
the PCM system requires the transmission speed of 64 kbps but the ADPCM system can realize transmission with the transmission speed of 32 kbps or less.
