MX-FNX4  OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION  5 – 14
[Paper folding start position]
[Paper folding roller stop position]
N. Double folding a stack (MX-FNX4)
To fold a stack consisting of 10 or more A4-R or LTR-R sheets, fold-
ing is executed twice for the same sheet.
The paper folding rollers rotate in reverse for an equivalent of 20
mm after gripping the stack for a length of 20 mm, enabling the
paper folding rollers to apply an increased degree of pressure
along the crease on the stack. Then, the paper folding rollers rotate
normally, and the paper pushing plate returns to its home position
while the stack is being delivered.
This way, a stack requiring a large force may properly be folded
with less pressure.
1)
The paper pushing plate pushes the stack in the direction of
the paper folding rollers.
2)
The paper folding rollers grip the stack for a length of about 20
mm.
3)
The paper folding rollers rotate in reverse, pushing back the
stack for a length of about 20 mm (reverse feeding).

4) The paper folding rollers rotate again, feeding out the stack.

3. Intermediate stapling tray
A. Job offset
In the job offset mode, paper is shifted to the front or back by the
stack for delivery, and the stacks are sorted.
The paper delivered to the stapling tray is moved forward or back-
ward by the front alignment plate and the back alignment plate. The
aligned paper is stapled or discharged in accordance with the sig-
nals from the host machine. The finisher controller PCB drives the
alignment plate front motor (FFJM) and the alignment plate back
motor (FRJM) at power-on to return the two alignment plates to
their home positions.
Designations and functions of the motors and sensors to be used in
the stack job offset mode are shown below.
B. Stacking paper on stapling tray
After the trailing edge of paper passes through the first delivery
roller, the paper is delivered to the stapling tray by the delivery roller
and the return roller until it buts against the stapling tray stopper.
C. Offset operation
The front alignment plate or the back alignment plate shifts the
sheet delivered to the front or back. The offset operation is carried
out whenever paper is drawn into the stapling tray.

D. Trailing edge assist operation
When paper stacks are delivered, the trailing edge assist guide is
used to support the trailing edge of the stacks as well as the deliv-
ery roller for improvement in performance of stacking of paper
delivered to the stapling tray.
E. Delivery operation
The delivery is implemented whenever three sheets *1 of large size
paper or four sheets *2 of small size paper are offset on the stapling
tray.
As the swing motor runs, the swing guide is lowered. Then, paper
stack is caught between the upper and lower delivery rollers, and
delivered by the delivery roller and the trailing edge assist guide.
The trailing edge guide is stopped when it reaches the predefined
position, and returned with the reverse rotation of the trailing edge
assist motor. Then, the delivery motor runs continuously, and the
paper stack is delivered by the upper and the lower delivery rollers.
* Depends on the number of originals (Ranges from two minimally
to four maximally. For example, if number of originals is ten,
paper stacks are delivered in the following sequence: 3 sheets, 3
sheets, 4 sheets)
* Depends on the number of originals (Ranges from two minimally
to six maximally. For example, if number of originals is seven,
paper stacks are delivered in the following sequence: 6 sheets, 1
sheets)
4. Staple operation
A. Outline
This machine incorporates two stapler units. The stapler unit in the
finisher staples at one point in the front, one point at the back, or
two points. The stitcher unit in the saddle stitcher staples at two
points in the center of paper stack.
B. Stapler unit
Stapling is executed by the staple motor (FFSM). A single rotation
of the cam by the motor results in one stapling operation. The cam
is checked by the staple home position sensor (FSHPD) to find out
whether it is at the home position.
The stapler motor is controlled by the microprocessor (IC2) on the
finisher controller PCB so that it is rotated clockwise or counter-
clockwise.
When the stapling home position sensor is off, the finisher control-
ler PCB rotates the stapler motor clockwise until the sensor turns
on so as to return the stapling cam to its initial state.
The presence/absence of the staple cartridge and the presence/
absence of staples inside the staple cartridge are detected by the
staple sensor (FSD).
The staple edge sensor (FSTD) is used to find out whether a staple
has been edged out to the end of the cartridge.
The finisher controller PCB does not drive the staple motor (FFSM)
unless the staple safety switch (FSAD) is on. This is to protect
against injuries that could occur when a finger is stuck inside the
stapler.

C. Shifting the stapler unit
The stapler unit is moved by the stapler shift motor (FSM). Its home
position is detected by the stapler shift home position sensor
(FSTHPD). When the staple signal arrives from the host machine,
the stapler moves to the staple wait position appropriate for staple
position and the paper size. See the figures shown below for an
idea of the wait position according to the stapling mode.
Front 1-Point Stapling
The wait position is the same as the stapling position.
Rear 1-Point Stapling
The wait position is the same as the stapling position.
2-Point Stapling
The stapler is kept in wait in the front of the paper. Stapling occurs
at two points, first in the front, and then at the back.
