MX-FNX4  OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION  5 – 7
F. Basic operation of saddle stitch unit (MX-
FNX4)
Feeding of paper
Paper fed from the finisher is stored into the paper path in virtually
vertical direction sequentially. The paper path is determined by the
operation of the two paper deflector plates depending on the size of
paper.
The storage location of paper is determined by the paper position-
ing plate so that the center of paper is aligned with the stitching and
folding positions.
The order of paper storage is as follows; the last fed paper is stored
in the delivery direction of the previously fed paper. Number of
sheets allowed to be stored is as shown below.
• 15 sheets (Max.: 14 sheets of 80g/m
2
 and a sheet of 250 g/m
2
)
maximally
Alignment
Whenever paper is stored into the vertical path, the alignment plate
equipped at the edge of the vertical path aligns paper. Furthermore,
it also carries out folding of paper stack and alignment before deliv-
ery.
Stitching
After all the paper is stored, the two stitch units located at the cen-
ter of the paper stitch the paper sequentially.
The two stitch units cannot be operated simultaneously so as to
prevent wrinkling of paper that may occur between the stitches and
to limit the load applied to the power supply.
If only one sheet of paper is fed from the copier, the next step, mov-
ing of stacks is started without stitching.

Feeding of Stacks
The stitched paper is fed to the folding and delivery positions. The
paper folding must be performed at the point that the center of
paper (stitched point) is aligned with the height of the paper push-
ing plate and the folding roller pressurizing section.
The stack is moved forward by operating the paper positioning
plate. When the plate is operated, the guide plate that has been
covering the paper folding rollers, also moves down so that the
paper folding rollers directly face the stack.
Folding/Delivery
The paper pushing plate pushes against the center of the stack to
move it in the direction of the paper folding rollers. In response, the
paper folding rollers pick the stack along its center and fold it in two.
The paper folding rollers together with the delivery roller then move
the stack along to output it on the delivery tray.

G. Controlling the inlet flappers (MX-FNX4)
Outline
The two flappers mounted at the paper inlet are operated to config-
ure the feed path according to the size of paper. The flappers are
used to enable the following:
1) To detect the passage of the trailing edge of the paper being
moved by an appropriate sensor.
2) To prevent the following sheet from butting against the top of
the existing stack,
Table below shows the relationship between sensors and paper
sizes.
Each flapper is driven by its solenoid.
Table below shows the relationship between solenoids and paper
sizes.

Delivery Path of A4R/LTRR size paper

H. Controlling the movement of sheets (MX-
FNX4)
When the leading edge of a sheet has moved past the inlet flapper,
the intermediate feed roller and the crescent roller start to move the
sheet forward.
The intermediate feed roller is normally not in contact with the
roller. When the leading edge of a sheet reaches the intermediate
feed roller contact section, the feed plate contact solenoid (FSFCS)
causes the roller to come into contact with the roller so as to move
the sheet. The contact is broken as soon as the leading edge of the
sheet reaches the paper positioning plate. This series of operations
is executed each time a sheet arrives.
When the leading edge of the first sheet reaches the paper posi-
tioning plate, the paper positioning plate paper sensor (FSPPPD)
turns ON. The arrival of the second and subsequent sheets will not
be checked since the first sheet will still be over the sensor.
The crescent roller keeps rotating while sheets are being output,
butting the leading edge of each sheet against the paper position-
ing plate, and ultimately, keeping the leading edge of the stack in
order.
The alignment plate drives the alignment plates for each sheet so
as to put both left and right edges of the sheet in order.
1)
The solenoid turns ON while paper is being moved so that the
roller comes into contact.
2)
The solenoid turns OFF when the paper butts against the
paper positioning plate. The feed motor continues to rotate.
3)
The solenoid turns ON when the next sheet arrives, and the
roller comes into contact.
