POWER SOURCE 
AC power 
To AC INPUT
AC 230 - 240 V, 50 Hz
Connect the AC power lead to the AC power input
socket, then connect the AC power lead plug to an
AC socket.
Notes:
If the unit will not be used for a long period of
time, remove the AC power lead from the AC
socket.
Connection of the AC power lead to the unit
disconnects the batteries.
Never use a power lead other than the one
supplied. Use of a power lead other than the one
supplied may cause an electric shock or fire.
Battery power

Disconnect the AC power lead, and remove the
battery compartment cover.

Insert 2 "AA" size batteries (UM/SUM-3, R6,
HP-7 or similar) for tuner memory.

Insert 8 "D" size batteries (UM/SUM-1, R20,
HP-2 or similar) into the battery compartment.
When inserting or removing the batteries 
 and
, push them towards the 
ë
 battery terminals. 
Installing the batteries incorrectly may cause the
unit to malfunction.
Batteries are not included.

Replace the battery compartment cover.
Precautions for battery use:
Insert the batteries according to the direction
indicated on the rear panel.
Replace all old batteries with new ones at the
same time.
Do not mix old and new batteries.
Remove the batteries if they are weak or if the
unit will not be used for long periods of time. This
will prevent potential damage due to battery
leakage.
Caution:
Do not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cad-
mium battery, etc.).
When inserting or replacing the batteries for the
tuner memory for the first time, connect the AC
power cord and set the ON/STAND-BY switch to
ON.
If this operation is not performed, the life of the
tuner memory batteries will be shortened.
Battery replacement:
For the main unit:
Replace the batteries when they become weak
and/or recording or playback is impaired. This may
occur even though radio broadcasts are audible.
For the remote control:
Replace the batteries if the operating distance is
reduced or if the operation becomes erratic.

Notes:
Replace the batteries if the operating distance is
reduced or if the operation becomes erratic.
Periodically clean the transmitter LED on the
remote control and the sensor on the main unit
with a soft cloth.
Exposing the sensor on the main unit to strong
light may interfere with operation. Change the
lighting or the direction of the unit.
Keep the remote control away from moisture,
excessive heat, shock, and vibrations.

COMPACT DISC OPERATION 
CD playback

Set the function switch to CD.

Press the CD EJECT button to open the CD
compartment.

Place a compact disc on the spindle, label side
up.
8 cm (3") discs may be played without an adap-
tor.

Close the CD compartment by firmly pushing the
corner marked "PUSH CLOSE".

Rotate the VOLUME control towards right to
increase the volume, and towards left to de-
crease the volume.

Set the X-BASS switch to ON to emphasise the
bass region of the frequency spectrum.
Set the X-BASS switch to OFF to cancel the extra
bass mode.
Precautions:
When "no diSC" or track number is displayed,
the power is connected.
If you will not be using the CD player, set the
ON/STAND-BY switch to STAND-BY.
Do not open the CD compartment whilst the
disc is rotating.
If the disc is damaged, dirty, or loaded upside
down, "Er" or "no diSC" will appear in the
display.
Clean, replace, or reload the disc properly.
Keep foreign objects out of the CD compart-
ment.
Subjecting the unit to shock or vibration may
cause mistracking.
Keep the CD compartment closed except
when loading discs.
Playing certain compact discs at a high vol-
ume may cause mistracking. In this case,
listen at a lower volume.
The temperature range for playing compact
discs is recommended to be 5˚C (41˚F) - 35˚C
(95˚F).
If TV or radio interference occurs during CD
operation, move the unit away from the TV or
radio.
APSS (Auto Program Search System)
APSS automatically locates the beginning of any
track.
To listen again to the track being played:
Press the

 button for less than 0.5 seconds
during playback.
To move to the beginning of the next track:
Press the

 button for less than 0.5 seconds
during playback.
Notes:
To skip a number of tracks at one time, press the

Repeat play
An entire disc can be continuously repeated.
To repeat all of the tracks on the disc:
Press the PLAY/REPEAT (
0 R
) button twice during
playback.
To cancel repeat play:
Press the PLAY/REPEAT (

) button again.

normal playback at that point.
HEADPHONES 
Be sure your headphones have a 3.5 mm (1/8")
diameter plug and are between 16 ohms and 50
ohms impedance. The recommended imped-
ance is 32 ohms.
Connect the headphones plug to the PHONES
socket. The speakers will be automatically dis-
connected. Adjust the volume by using the VOL-
UME control.
CASSETTE OPERATION 
Tape playback

Set the function switch to TAPE.

Load the cassette into the cassette compart-
ment.

Press the PLAY button.

To advance the tape, press the STOP/EJECT
button, then press the F FWD button. To rewind,
press the STOP/EJECT button, then press the
REWIND button.
To interrupt playback:
Press the PAUSE button during playback.
Press the PAUSE button again to resume playback.
To stop playback:
Press the STOP/EJECT button.
Precautions:
Be sure not to press the PLAY and REWIND
buttons simultaneously, or the tape will become
damaged.
Before changing from one tape operation to
another, press the STOP/EJECT button.
Do not press the PAUSE button whilst the fast
forward or rewind operations are in progress.
The F FWD or REWIND button will not be re-
leased when the tape end is reached. Once this
occurs, press the STOP/EJECT button.

RADIO OPERATION 
Manual tuning

Set the function switch to TUNER.

Select the desired frequency band. (FM ST, FM
or AM)
To receive an FM stereo transmission, press the
BAND button so that the "ST" indicator on the
display lights up.
The "
j
" indicator lights up when an FM broad-
cast is in stereo.

Press the TUNING (
X
 or 
W
) button to tune into
the desired station.
Holding it down for more than 0.5 seconds will
cause the frequency to change rapidly until the
button is released.
If the FM reception is poor, press the BAND
button so that the "ST" indicator goes out.
Although the reception changes to monaural, the
sound becomes clearer.
Please note that when the unit is being tuned in
the FM stereo mode, interim station noise as well
as weak stations are suppressed. Only in the FM
monaural mode, can weak and noisy stations be
received.

Preset tuning
You  can store up to 30 stations in memory (30
stations consisting of any combination of FM and
AM stations you like) and recall them at the push of
a button. FM stations can be recalled in either stereo
or mono.

Perform steps 1 - 3 of the "Manual tuning" sec-
tion.

Press the TUNER MEMORY button.
Preset Number

Within 5 seconds, press the PRESET (

 or

button until the preset number to be programmed
flashes in the display.

Within 5 seconds, press the TUNER MEMORY
button to store that station in the selected station
preset number memory.
If the "MEMORY" and preset number indicators
go out before the station is memorised, repeat
the operation from step 2.
The preset numbers in step 2 are displayed
starting from the low numbers which have not
been assigned. If the preset numbers are as-
signed in order, step 3 can also be omitted.
If you want to change the station assigned to a
preset number, select that preset number in step
3.

Repeat steps 1 - 4 to set other preset stations,
or to change a preset station.
To recall a memorised station

Set the function switch to TUNER.

Press the PRESET (

) button to recall the
desired preset channel number.
If there are no stations memorised, this operation
can not be performed.
After use:
Set the ON/STAND-BY switch to STAND-BY.
Notes:
When the memory batteries are installed in the
unit, the memory recalls the last station received
even after changing the band selector, setting
the ON/STAND-BY switch to STAND-BY or un-
plugging the unit from AC power.
If the memory batteries are not inserted and the
power is disconnected, the tuner’s preset
memories will be erased.
Replace the memory batteries approximately
once a year.
