The program remains even after Program Play ends
When you press H, you can play the same program again.

Notes
• The number of titles, chapters or tracks displayed are the same
number of titles, chapters or tracks recorded on a disc.
• The program is canceled when:
– you open or close the disc tray

• Depending on the DVD, you may not be able to perform
Program Play.
• If you are using the PBC playback function, you must first stop
the disc before you can set a program.
• When playing Super VCDs, the total time of the programmed
tracks does not appear on the screen.
• You cannot use the Program Play function in karaoke mode.

You can have the player “shuffle” titles, chapters or tracks
and play them in a random order.  Subsequent “shuffling”
may produce a different playing order.
Select “SHUFFLE” after pressing DISPLAY.  When you
select a shuffle mode other than “OFF,” the “SHUFFLE”
indicator lights up in green.

Repeating a Specific Portion (A-B Repeat) 
 
 
You can play a specific portion of a title, chapter or track
repeatedly. This function is useful when you want to do
such things as memorize lyrics.
During PBC Playback of VIDEO CDs (page 22), this
function is available only while playing moving pictures.
Select “A-B REPEAT” after pressing DISPLAY.  During A-
B Repeat Play, the “A-B REPEAT” indicator lights up in
green.

Adjusting the Picture
Quality (BNR) 
 
The Block Noise Reduction (BNR) function adjusts the
picture quality by reducing the “block noise” or mosaic
like patterns that appear on your TV screen.
Select “BNR” after pressing DISPLAY.  If you select any
setting other than OFF, the “BNR” indicator lights up in
green.

• OFF:  resets the BNR setting.
• 1:  reduces the “block noise.”
• 2:  reduces the “block noise” more than 1.
• 3:  reduces the “block noise” more than 2.
Notes
• If the outlines of the images on your screen should become
blurred, set BNR to “OFF.”
• Depending on the disc or the scene being played, the BNR
effect may be hard to discern.

Enjoying
Karaoke
This chapter describes how to play
discs in karaoke mode and how to use
the various karaoke features .
Using Karaoke
You can enjoy karaoke (singing along with a disc) by
setting this player to karaoke mode.  You can connect up
to two microphones (not supplied) to the player.
Setting the player to karaoke mode
The player enters karaoke mode when a microphone is
plugged into the MIC 1 or 2 connector.
The player exits from karaoke mode when you disconnect
the microphones from both of the MIC 1 and 2 connectors.
You may also switch karaoke mode on or off by pressing
KARAOKE MODE on the remote. The KEY CONTROL
button indicators light up when the player is in karaoke
mode.
When you turn the karaoke mode on with DVDs or Super
VCDs, the karaoke play is performed with the audio
channel you selected in “AUDIO” of the Control Menu
display.  With CDs or VIDEO CDs, the “AUDIO” setting
automatically changes to “1/L” so that only the
accompaniment is played when you turn the karaoke
mode on. If the vocal audio is heard with some discs,
select the audio channel for the karaoke play in “AUDIO”
of the Control Menu display (page 31).
Notes on karaoke mode
• You cannot use the karaoke function with the DIGITAL OUT
connectors.
• You cannot use the Program Play function in karaoke mode.
• Sound tracks with a 96 kHz (PCM) sampling frequency are
converted to 48 kHz sampling frequency in karaoke mode.

Using the Karaoke Control Menu Display 
 
 
You can use the Karaoke Control Menu display when the
player is in karaoke mode. Using the Karaoke Control
Menu display, you can enjoy karaoke features such as
changing the key, applying effects and programming the
next titles and tracks.
For details about each Karaoke Control Menu item, see
pages 48 to 55.
Displaying the Karaoke Control Menu
display
Set the player to karaoke mode (page 45), then press
DISPLAY until the Karaoke Control Menu display
appears. Use M/m to select item you want, then press
ENTER. The Karaoke Control Menu selection operations
are the same as the Control Menu operations. For details
about the Control Menu operations, see “Using the
Control Menu Display” on page 25.

Adjusting the microphone

Set the MIC 1/2 LEVEL control of the MIC connector
to MIN.

Plug a microphone (not supplied) into the MIC
connector.
When a microphone is connected to the MIC 1 or 2
connector, the player enters karaoke mode.

Set the ON/OFF switch on the microphone to ON
and turn the MIC 1/2 LEVEL control to adjust the
microphone volume.

Turn the ECHO LEVEL control to adjust the echo.
The same echo level is applied to all connected
microphones.

If howling occurs
• Move the microphone away from the speakers.
• Lower the microphone volume or echo level.
• Lower the overall volume.
Notes
• The sound input from the microphone is not output from the
DIGITAL OUT OPTICAL and COAXIAL connectors.
• You can turn the karaoke mode off even when a microphone is
connected to the MIC 1 or 2 connector by pressing KARAOKE
MODE on the remote. You can continue using the microphone
but the echo function and the ECHO LEVEL control do not
work.
Dolby Digital Karaoke format 
Dolby Digital format, which reproduces surround sound
using 5 channels, contains the “Dolby Digital Karaoke”
format specialized for karaoke.  In the Dolby Digital
Karaoke format discs, guide melody and guide vocal
tracks are recorded in addition to the accompaniment. You
can select them when the player is in karaoke mode.

You can check the audio information using “AUDIO” in
the Control Menu display. When playing a Dolby Digital
Karaoke disc, “9KARAOKE” appears at the current audio

Inserting the Applause

You can insert applause with or without cheers in the
karaoke mode.
To automatically insert the effect at the
beginning and end of the titles and tracks

with cheers. (You may not be able to do this operation
depending on the DVD or when doing PBC playback of a
VIDEO CD.)
Each time you press EFFECT MODE, the effect changes as

Applying the Surround
Effect (Karaoke Surround)
 
 
The karaoke surround function gives surround effects to
the accompaniment sound.
Select “KARAOKE SURROUND” in the Karaoke Control
Menu display. Select the karaoke surround mode using
M/m, and then press ENTER. To cancel the karaoke
surround, select “OFF” using M/m, and then press
ENTER.
To use the Karaoke Control Menu display, see “Displaying
the Karaoke Control Menu display” on page 47.

 KARAOKE SURROUND
• OFF:  turns off the karaoke surround function.
• QUASI-STEREO:  gives a stereo like effect to the
monaural accompaniment sound. This mode is effective
with CDs/VIDEO CDs.
• LIVE:  emphasizes treble frequencies of the
accompaniment sound to give a live concert
performance effect.
• MOVIE:  gives a theater performance effect to the
accompaniment sound.
• VOCAL:  reduces the accompaniment sound level so
that your voice is emphasized. This mode is effective
with CDs/VIDEO CDs.
Note
Do not use the KARAOKE SURROUND function together with
the TVS function (page 36). You will not be able to enjoy the
surround sound effect presented by TVS.

When VIDEO CDs and CDs are played in karaoke mode,
the audio output automatically changes so that only the
left channel (accompaniment track) is played and output
from both front speakers (L, R).
You can listen to the vocals by pressing VOCAL while the
accompaniment is being played.

You can select the vocals
When the Vocal Support function is set to “ON,” you can change
the guide vocal by pressing VOCAL SELECT. See “Selecting the
Vocals” (page 51).
Notes
• When you turn the Vocal Support function on, the Vocal
function is automatically turned off (page 50).
• When switching the recorded vocal and your vocal while
playing a Super VCD, the sound may cut off for a moment.

You can listen to the guide melody.
Select “GUIDE MELODY” in the Karaoke Control Menu
display. To turn the guide melody on, select “ON” using
M/m, and then press ENTER. To cancel the guide melody,
select “OFF” using M/m, and then press ENTER.

Notes
• This function works only with the Dolby Digital Karaoke
format.
• If no guide melody is recorded on the disc, you cannot hear the
guide melody even if you turn it on.

You can set the player to pause every time a track is
played.
Select “AUTO PAUSE” in the Karaoke Control Menu
display. To turn the Auto Pause function on, select “ON”
using M/m, and then press ENTER. To cancel the Auto
Pause function, select “OFF” using M/m, and then press
ENTER.

To reserve other titles or tracks, repeat Step 2.
You can reserve other titles or tracks even while
playing a disc.
To reserve titles or tracks from another disc:

When the player reaches “
 (next disc),” it will
stop so that you can change the disc.
To cancel the number, press CLEAR.
The reserved titles or tracks are played in the reserved
order.
If you reserve titles or tracks when the player is in stop
mode, press H to start Reserve Play.
To exit the RESERVE display
Press RESERVE. The RESERVE display is turned off.
However, the player memorizes the contents of the
reserve list.
To cancel Reserve Play
Select “OFF” in “RESERVE” in the Karaoke Control Menu
display or press CLEAR.  All of the reserve settings are
erased.

Select “SET,” in “RESERVE” in the Karaoke Control Menu

You can select a reserved title or track
While playing the reserved title or track, you can jump to the next
title or track by pressing the > (NEXT) button and then return
to the beginning of the current title or track with the . (PREV)

player is in karaoke mode. You can reserve additional
tracks/titles even if somebody is performing karaoke.
Once the track or title is performed, it disappears from the
reserve list.

• You cannot do Shuffle Play and Repeat Play while using this
function. The Shuffle Play or Repeat Play setting is canceled
when you start reserving tracks or titles.
• If the reserved title or track does not exist, “Reserve play of
title** is prohibited.” or “Reserve play of track** is prohibited.”
appears and the next title or track is played.
• The reserve function does not work during PBC playback of a
