In Parallel communication, eight bits of data are simultaneously sent from a PC to an
external device such as a printer. There are five current parallel communication
modes available within the market.  Each of these are briefly explained below.
The AR5132 is capable of communicating in Compatibility Mode or Nibble Mode.
For the copier to communicate in Nibble Mode, an IEEE 1284 compatible Centronics
cable must be used, and the PC must also be capable of communicating in this the
mode.  If Nibble Mode cannot be used, both the PC and the AR5132 will
communicate in Compatibility Mode.

A Printer Control Language designed by Hewlett Packard (HP). PCL defines a
standard set of commands enabling applications to communicate with Hewlett
Packard or compatible printers.  PCL has become a standard for Laser and Ink-jet
printers and is supported by virtually all printer manufacturers.  HP compatible or
Laser-Jet compatible means a printer supports the PCL command set. The main
strength of PCL is in its capability for reproducing Text Type Documents. PCL5E is
the latest version of the language.  It supports printer resolutions up to 600dpi or the
printer’s maximum (If less than 600dpi).
3'/3DJH'HVFULSWLRQ/DQJXDJH
A Page Description Language is used in order to tell an Application such as Microsoft
Word what the printed page should look like. Page Description Languages are used as
they offer certain benefits for customers when transferring files across a network.
Two examples of a PDL are Postscript and PCL.

PING is a DOS command that can be used to test an IP Address of a device and so
communication to a device through the IP Address over a network.  It is a very handy
command for trouble shooting purposes when a network is using the TCP/IP protocol.

PPD’s are used with Windows NT, Windows 95 and Apple Macintosh computers to
add the basic machine Information about the printer, such as paper sources, resolution
capabilities etc. A “PPD” is a Postscript “Mini-driver” that ads information to the
built in standard drivers within the operating system.  A “PPD” is basically a text file
and because of this, is platform independent.
The  “PPD” that comes with the AR5132 Printer Board does not include all the
features that a Full Blown Sharp Specific Printer Driver such as the Postscript Level 2
or PCL drivers do include.  Reverse Order printing and booklet mode, are two of the
main features that the PPD does not support.

A Page Description Language devised by Adobe, for producing graphics and text.  Its
strength however is in the reproduction of graphics.
3ULQWHU'ULYHU
A printer driver translates the output from the application into a print language that
can control a printer.
3ULQWHU4XHXH
On a file server network, a print queue would exist on the file server.  This is where
all print jobs are sent to from each workstation temporarily so that they can be
prioritised and controlled until the printer is ready.  When the printer is ready to
accept the print job, the data is collected by the print server and then forwarded to the
printer.
3ULQW6HUYHU
A print server can be running as part of a file server or can be running on a dedicated
workstation.  If a workstation is used as a dedicated print server, this cannot also be
used as a computer for a user.  The print server’s job is to monitor the print queue on
the file server and “Poll” the queue.  Polling the queue or de-spooling is where the top
job of the queue is taken and transferred to the printer.
3ULQWVHW
Printset is a software package designed by HBM.  It is bundled with the network card
that attaches to the AR5132 and can be used to remotely configure the copiers
network card.
