Trouble Codes
Trouble codes are provided to assist the Copier Engineer when diagnosing faults on the
machine. They consist of a main code and a sub code, and will be displayed on screen if a
fault occurs on the machine.
Refer to the following overview of trouble codes for AR-235 / AR-275

Firmware Upgrade
The procedure of upgrading Flash ROM versions of the Copier engine is relatively simple,
requiring no specialised hardware aside from a Personal Computer and an RS-232
connecting cable (level converter is not needed).

The cable required for connecting the personal computer to the copier is an RS-232
crossover (null-modem) cable, which must terminate with a 9-pin connector at the copier
end. A suitable cable can be purchased from Maplin Electronics – part number VD76. Please
contact Maplin Electronics directly on 0870 2646000 for more information.

The following diagram represents the connection between the Personal Computer and the

copier:
The copier should be switched off whilst connecting the crossover cable between the
interface circuit and the Personal Computer, and should remain off whilst the maintenance
(upgrade) software is being loaded. Once the maintenance program has started with the
correct password, it is then possible to supply power to the copier. If the cable has been
connected correctly and the software is running properly it should then be possible to see the
upgrade options appear on the screen. Note that it is possible to perform an all-area
download, in order to upgrade all flash ROM components (except PCL), and it is also
possible to upgrade separate components individually – Operation Panel, E-Sort, Fax (if
installed), and Finisher (if installed).

During the maintenance operation, the program will check the version number of the selected
Flash ROM component and will not overwrite contents of Flash ROM if they are more recent
than the files stored on the Personal Computer. To check the firmware versions installed in
the copier, you may perform simulation 22-5.

To complete the upgrade, close the maintenance program and switch copier power off.
Remove crossover cable, switch machine on and then perform simulation 22-5 to check
firmware has been successfully upgraded.

PCL Flash ROM (when optional print kit is installed) can be upgraded using the maintenance
program, but an IEEE-1284 complaint parallel cable is used instead of the serial crossover
cable. The set-up procedure is also slightly different, in that the copier needs to be manually
switched to Download mode by use of sim 67-14. Afterwards, the maintenance program can
be used as before in order to upgrade the PCL firmware only. It is also possible to transmit
the PCL firmware file from the Personal Computer to the copier by using the COPY or
FCOPY commands from within DOS.
