Subject: Removing and replacing HLS Series drivers
JBL HLS speaker systems have uniquely designed drivers which require special care when
removing them for service. Please follow these guidelines when removing/replacing loudspeaker
components.
Woofer Removal and Replacement
The mounting screws which hold the woofer in place are hidden behind the outer edge of the
woofer’s rubber surround.  They can be easily accessed and removed by gently lifting the
surround’s “flap” to expose each screw.  After all 4 screws are removed, the woofer may still be
held in place by the putty like material on the back of the woofer’s frame.  DO NOT use the flaps
to pull the woofer out.  Loosen the woofer by carefully placing a small flat blade screwdriver in
one of the mounting screw holes and use it to gently pry the woofer up.
After lifting the woofer out of the cabinet, the polarized lead wires can then be removed and
installed on the replacement woofer. Reinstall the woofer by lining up it’s 4 mounting screw holes
with those in the enclosure and gently drop the woofer into place. Carefully lift each flap and
reinstall the 4 mounting screws.
Tweeter Removal and Replacement
The tweeter is mounted to the back of the horn with a unique bayonet mounting system that
snaps into place. Because the horn is permanently attached to the enclosure, it is necessary to
remove the woofer to gain access to the tweeter.
After removing the woofer (see above), reach into the woofer hole and twist the tweeter element
slightly to the left. Remove the tweeter from the back of the horn, disconnect the polarized wires
and reinstall them on the replacement tweeter. Center the replacement tweeter onto the back of
the horn and twist it slightly to the right until it snaps into place. Replace woofer.
