Service bulletin # 9603 -March 1996
Warranty labor rate: MAJOR repair
To: All harman/kardon Service Centers
Models: FL8400 / FL8450 CD changers
Subject: Revisions to improve; Drawer mechanics, and Servo circuits
_____________________________________________________________________________________
In the event you receive a unit from a consumer with a complaint of the drawer not closing you may need to
make revisions to that unit. All units that have serial numbers below those listed in this service bulletin need
to be revised.
Due to tolerances in manufacturing of chassis parts it is possible that the teeth of the drawer and those of the
drive gear do not always mesh correctly. A result of the aforementioned, the drawer will not close
completely.
This bulletin also addresses the improvements made to the servo circuits used in these units. The servo
circuits may oscillate at 500 KHz modulated by 88KHz and cause circuits to run hot and become less
reliable.
Procedure for revised drawer mechanics. Perform on units with serial number less than;
I001-31001 for FL8400, and I009-04000 for FL8450. Remove Loading gear Assembly (Sub Ass’y C ).
Remove poly washer (W5) from the loading gear (22). Lift loading gear off shaft and place a .5mm poly
washer ( hk part no. 8338300910) on shaft and replace gear. Discard washer (W5), instead use .2mm
washer (8338300910-1) to secure gear. Realign drawer synchronization.
Procedure for revised servo drive circuit. Perform on units with serial number less than;
I001-36001 for FL8400, and I009-06001 for FL8450.
