Program Search (PTY)
An important feature of RDS is its capability of
encoding broadcasts with Program Type (PTY)
codes that indicate the type of material being
broadcast. The following list shows the abbrevia-
tions used to indicate each PTY, along with an
explanation of the PTY:
• (RDS ONLY)

You may search for a specific Program Type
(PTY) by following these steps:
1. Press the RDS button @
N until the cur-
rent PTY is shown in the Main Information
Display
M.
2. While the PTY is shown, press the Preset
Up/Down
button )
O or hold them pressed
to scroll through the list of available PTY types,
as shown above.
3. Press any of the Tuning Up/Down buttons
8
J, the tuner begins to scan the FM band
upwards or downwards for the first station that
has RDS data that matches the desired selec-
tion, and acceptable signal strength for quality
reception.
4. The tuner will make up to one complete scan
of the entire FM band for the next station that
matches the desired PTY type and has accept-
able reception quality. If no such station is
found, the display will read NONE for some
seconds and the tuner will return to the last FM
station in use before the search.
NOTE: Many stations do not transmit a specific
PTY. The display will show NONE, when such a
station is selected and PTY is active.
NOTE: Some stations transmit constant traffic
information. To identify as traffic station, they
transmit a specific traffic code constantly, which
causes the TA Indicator K to light in the dis-
play. These stations can be found by selecting
TRAFFIC, the option in front of NEWS in the list.
The AVR 1500 will find the appropriate station,
even if it is not broadcasting traffic information
when the search is made.
Remote
The AVR 1500 is equipped with a powerful
remote control that will control not only the
receiver’s functions, but also the DVD 1500.
As shipped from the factory, the remote is fully
programmed for all AVR 1500 functions, as well
as those of the DVD 1500.
To switch between operating the AVR 1500 and
the DVD 1500, press the Input Selectors to
select either the AVR 1500
5 or the DVD 1500
4. Some of the remote control functions will
work no matter if the AVR 1500 or the DVD 1500
is selected. (See page 26). Pressing another input
source than DVD will change the AVR 1500's
input to this source. After that press the AVR
Input Selector button
5 again to be able to
control the AVR 1500. To control the source you
just selected, use the remote control of that spe-
cific source.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 27
Troubleshooting Guide
Processor Reset
In the rare case where the unit’s operation or the
displays seem abnormal, the cause may involve
the erratic operation of the system’s memory or
microprocessor.
To correct this problem, first unplug the unit from
the AC wall outlet and wait at least three min-
utes. After the pause, reconnect the AC power
cord and check the unit’s operation. If the system
still malfunctions, a system reset may clear the
problem.
To clear the AVR 1500’s entire system memory
including tuner presets, output level settings,
delay times and speaker configuration data, first
put the unit in Standby by pressing the System
Power Control
button 2. Next, press the
Tone Mode 6 and the RDS @ buttons simul-
taneously.
The unit will turn on automatically and display
the R E S E T message in the Main
Information Display
M. Note that once you
have cleared the memory in this manner, it is nec-
essary to re-establish all system configuration
settings and tuner presets.
NOTE: Resetting the processor will erase any
configuration settings you have made for speak-
ers, output levels, surround modes, digital input
assignments as well as the tuner presets. After a
reset the unit will be returned to the factory pre-
sets, and all settings for these items must be
reentered.
If the system is still operating incorrectly, there
may have been an electronic discharge or severe
AC line interference that has corrupted the mem-
ory or microprocessor.
If these steps do not solve the problem, consult
an authorized Harman Kardon service depot.
